Why the name Halyzia®?

Ever wondered where the name Halyzia comes from?

  • Legend has it that the mysterious blobs marking the fast ripples on the normalized scalograms (Figure 1) bore an uncanny resemblance to the delicate colors of a ladybird. And so, inspired by this likeness to the enchanting beetles of the genus Halyzia, the name was born. Yes, data can sometimes meet nature’s poetry.

Fast-ripples and scalogram

Figure 1: Blobs on a scalogram. See how the blobs are reminiscent (yes, with some imagination) of ladybirds.

Top panel: raw signal. Middle panel: signal filtered between 200 and 600Hz. Bottom panel: normalised scalogram. The event view windows of Halyzia presents the data this way.

  • Another tale whispers that the antennae of ladybirds mirror the form of intracerebral electrodes. And since Halyzia is an expert software for intracerebral EEG processing, the connection was inevitable.

  • You thought that was all? Not at all. Others claim that Halyzia comes from the fusion of HAL, the supercomputer from 2001: A Space Odyssey (yes, it went mad—but we’re working hard to ensure that never happens with Halyzia), and IA, the French acronym for Artificial Intelligence.

  • And finally, we have Halissath, our Junior Product Owner. With a name so closely echoing Halyzia, it feels only natural—she’s the perfect person in the perfect role.
